Phonics Programme
Phonics is a method for teaching reading and writing of the English language by developing learners’ phonemic awareness the ability to hear, identify, and manipulate phonemes in order to teach the correspondence between these sounds and the spelling patterns (graphemes) that represent them.
The goal of phonics is to enable beginning readers to decode new written words by sounding them out, or, in phonics terms, blending the sound-spelling patterns. Since it focuses on the spoken and written units within words, phonics is a sublexical approach and, as a result, is often contrasted with Whole Language, a word-level-up philosophy for teaching reading
The primary focus of phonics instruction is to help beginning readers understand how letters are linked to sounds (phonemes) to form letter-sound correspondences and spelling patterns and to help them learn how to apply this knowledge in their reading.
Cognitive reading skills
Both the lexical and the sub-lexical cognitive processes.
Sub-lexical reading
Sub-lexical reading involves teaching reading by associating characters or groups of characters with sounds or by using phonics learning and teaching methods. Sometimes argued to be in competition with whole language methods.
Lexical reading
Lexical reading involves acquiring words or phrases without attention to the characters or groups of characters that compose them or by using Whole Language learning and teaching methods. Sometimes argued to be in competition with phonics and Synthetic Phonics methods.
